Eat BBQ, Support SPHS!

The Society of Public Health Students is hosting a fundraiser at City BBQ on Monday, April 27 at the City BBQ on Henderson (2111 W Henderson Road Columbus, Ohio 43220). It is a mere 10-15 minutes from Campus! In order to be eligible to participate, you must use a flier that has our information on it. You merely give it to the people when you order. It's THAT easy! And if you've never eaten City BBQ, it's amazing! And, on Mondays (the day we have!) they have $3 off any sampler platter! A ton of food, for not a lot of money AND you can support SPHS!

So tell your friends, family and faculty! Fliers will be available to pick up in the Starling Loving lounge or by asking any one of the officers. Email us, we'd be happy to meet with you and deliver them!

If anyone has any questions, please contact Sara at morrow.127@osu.edu. Mark your calendars!!

Spring Quarter Community Service

Hello SPHS Students,
Winter quarter was a pretty slow SPHS quarter, but that just means spring quarter will be the busiest and best yet! We have all sorts of events planned for our group, and I really encourage you to find something you're interested in and get involved!

Here are some of the things we'd like to do this quarter:

Clintonville Community Market

What is it?: We are a unique community-owned natural foods cooperative grocery store with a full selection of organic and natural products, a caring staff, and great music to shop by. We promote lifestyles of health and sustainability and provide a center and networking point for Columbus’s environmentally concerned citizens. We support many local farmers, vendors, and artists, and have a strong commitment to the values of sustainable development and community building, which is reflected in our product selection, as well as our education and outreach activities.
Volunteer Opportunities: http://www.communitymarket.org/mem/volunteer

Picture This: Earth Day 2009
What is it?: Central Ohioans come together to volunteer for EARTH DAY! From the website: "Please join us on Saturday, April 18th and Sunday, April 19th for Earth Day 2009: Picture This. For 2009, we are moving to a two day format with all Saturday for volunteer worksites and Sunday for the celebration in Goodale Park. The goal this year is to encourage 3,000 volunteers to participate at worksites run by your favorite area environmental groups, including FLOW, Metro Parks, FACT, Columbus Recreation and Parks, Sierra Club and many others."
Volunteer Opportunities: We will be voting on a worksite at the SPHS meeting early spring quarter. In the meantime, visit the website to get an idea of where you'd like to volunteer: http://www.picturethis09.org/

Unverferth House
What is it?: The Unverferth House serves as a temporary residence for The Ohio State University Medical Center patients and families who live outside Franklin County. The House provides a safe and comfortable environment to families and offers them a chance to share thoughts and emotions with others who may be experiencing a similar situation. The House also serves as convenient housing for patients just after discharge, when frequent visits back to University Medical Center are required.
Volunteer Opportunities: Groups cook dinners on Monday and Tuesday evenings (about 5 or 6 o'clock). The groups provide all the food and the Unverferth House provides a kitchen to cook the food as well as utensils, pots, pans, etc. After the meal is cooked, it is placed individually on paper plates which are wrapped and delivered to the residents. There are 8 apartments in the Unverferth House, which gives an average of 12 to 15 guests staying there at one time. That is, 12 to 15 people that you can plan to cook for if you choose to cook dinner.

Relay for Life
What is it?: An overnight event designed to spread awareness of cancer prevention, treatments and cures, celebrate survivorship and raise money for research to find cures for Cancer. Sponsored by the American Cancer Society.
When: May 9 (through the morning of the 10th)
Where: Fred Beekman Park (West Campus)
SPHS is forming its own team to participate in the 2009 Relay for Life Event!
Join our team by going here to register: http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?team_id=418076&fr_id=16537&pg=team
In the future we will discuss and plan fundraisers to prepare for this event. I set our fundraising goal pretty low ($500); a group our size should have no trouble at all raising at least that much. Let's try to double that!

Capital Area Humane Society

What is it?: Columbus area homeless shelter for dogs and cats
Volunteer Opportunities: Dogwalking, cat socialization, and matchmaking! To volunteer, you must first attend a volunteer orientation. Upcoming orientations are:
Thursday, March 26, 6:00 pm
Saturday, April 4, 10:00am
Saturday, May 2, 10:00 am
Visit the website for more information (http://www.cahs-pets.org/get_involved/volunteer.htm).

Cat Welfare Silent Socialization
What is it?: Cat Welfare Association is a non-profit homeless shelter for cats.
Volunteer Opportunity: Stop in on April 14th for socialization from 6:00-8:00pm at the CWA shelter. Come in and love on the CWA cats with fellow feline fans! Please, note that this event is just to visit with the cats. There will be no intake of new animals or adoptions during this event. You must arrive at the event by 6:00pm to be able to participate.

Bowling League?

Hello everyone!
Would anyone be interested in forming a Bowling League next quarter to support the Susan G. Komen foundation? Please comment on this entry if you think you'd be interested!

More information below...

Have Fun And Roll A Strike Against Breast Cancer!

Come bowl today in the new Breast Cancer Awareness League offered at participating AMF centers. By joining this league AND by participating in the USBC Bowl For The Cure event at your center, you can knock down pins to help knock out this dreadful disease.

A portion of the weekly league fees will be donated by AMF to The Bowling Foundation to benefit Susan G. Komen For The Cure. Ask your AMF staff for more league details.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women. The good news is that the survival rate continues to improve and now there are more than 2 million survivors in the United States. So, gather your friends, co-workers and loved ones and come roll a strike against breast cancer at AMF.

Visitation Days - HELP NEEDED

FROM JUDY DAWSON:

The College will be a visitation day for the 2009 accepted students on Friday, April 3rd. This is an opportunity for the students to visit our campus, meet with faculty, students, staff and alumni so that we can provide them with information to assist them in making an informed decision.

We would like to request student participation on both dates during the morning session at the round table discussions, campus walking tours and lunch.

In addition, if anyone has a poster presentation or would like to highlight their research we would like to include you in our Resource Fair.

Lastly, if you would be willing to host a visiting student that may need overnight accommodations please contact me.

Thanking you in advance for any assistance you can provide at our CPH visitation days in making them a success. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer please email me at: dawson.6@osu.edu or call 293-6787.
